Now that I have your attention let's talk about guilty pleasures. Everyone has them no matter how much you try to act cool. This could be an embarrassing movie that you won't admit you like but actually love or the fact that you still blast Backstreet boys in your car. We all have our own unique guilty pleasures. As I am sure you could deduce by the title picture one of mine is My Little Pony. While I could have a whole post on why that show is amazing and you are all wrong that is not what we are here for today. I will try to keep this post short and sweet (like the whiskies on this list) but I just want to highlight some of what I think should be whiskey drinkers' guilty pleasures.
Crown Royal Peach
This one surprised the heck out of me. It was selling out everywhere so I assumed it was just a gimmick. That is until my buddy got a bottle for me. Lindsay and I tried it and were blown away. Flavored whiskeys can be very hit or miss but this one is definitely a big hit for us. We immediately called him up and bought as many bottles as he could find because it was a limited release. This tastes just like liquid peach gummy candy which is incredible. We drink it over ice and just sit on our back deck in the warm weather, cuddled up next to the bonfire in the fall. Fair warning though, this is a VERY sweet whiskey so if you don't want to drink candy, then you may want to shy away from this one. Now is this one on my shelf with the rest of my good whiskies? Absolutely not. It is tucked away in a cabinet. Am I hiding it because I am embarrassed? Honestly, not really. First of all, I don't want to share it because it's mine and second of all I would not classify this as a "nice" whiskey that deserves to be displayed. My mom (who really only likes wine) pours it over her fruit as a special snack so it is mom-approved and that is what is most important in life. If you ever get a chance to find a bottle of this I would recommend picking it up. It won't be your favorite bottle in your collection but it is a fun one to have.
Jim Beam Maple
Anything maple I know I am going to love so this making the list isn't a surprise. I grew up in a town that had a maple syrup festival every year and with all the candy I eat, my blood is basically syrup at this point. I am like Buddy from elf and I know this would be the whiskey of his choice because it is in the four basic food groups. Candy, candy corn, candy canes, and syrup. I say all that to say this, it is basically alcoholic maple syrup and I am here for that! While Whistle Pig has an actual alcoholic maple syrup that I will talk about later this is a great drink version. To be completely honest it is a little too sweet for even me to drink straight. I have done it and I regret nothing but I wouldn't recommend it like that to normal people. My preferred way to drink this is to mix it with apple cider warm or cold. It mixes with so much so well because maple syrup goes great on everything (even spaghetti). The best part about this one is if you get drunk on it you wake up smelling like pancakes instead of booze! If you are looking for a good mixer to sweeten things up or just really like maple syrup this is a good whiskey to pick up.
Skrewball
This one should not work. In no world should a peanut butter-flavored whiskey be good. However, it somehow defies all logic... and is good. That isn't to say it compares to Makers Mark or anything like that but it is a different type of whiskey. I would not drink this as a daily drink but it is a fun change of pace every once in a while. I was actually adamantly against trying this. I love peanut butter, and I love whiskey, but the marriage of the two did not sound appealing. I was finally talked into a glass of it and I must say I was genuinely shocked by how well it worked. After being so wrong about Skrewball I actually came up with the idea for this post. Guilty pleasures are always a fun thing to giggle over at parties and what is the internet expect one big party where nothing bad is said...ever. I am not proud that I like it but I really don't care. It was good for whatever reason. Bottles are not expensive so if you ever find one I would recommend picking up a bottle. Whether you like it or not it is a good one to have in your stock to make people try new things.
Fireball
NO! Just no. I am not convinced this is even real whiskey. I know this is going to be on almost everyone's list and that is okay but come on. We are better than this. Heck, most of the time it isn't even a guilty pleasure because people are proud of it. I am all for reliving our glory days but once you are out of college this should stay with the Natty light and out of our homes. The fact that the above picture is one of the first that comes up when you search it should tell you enough! Like I have said before though, as long as you are enjoying your whiskey drink it any way you like as long as it makes you happy. With that in mind, I don't dislike anyone who enjoys this and more power to you but this is not on my guilty pleasures list. I just figured I would have to address the gorilla in the room. Whoops never mind that is just a frat kid in a gorilla costume. I should have known even the mere mention of this drink would attract a Greek life party. Excuse me while I get the college kids chanting toga out of my house.
I hope you all enjoyed my list of my whiskey guilty pleasures. After giving you a peek into the other side of my collection I would love to hear what some of yours are!
Cheers!
