Top 10 Movies (Part 1)

What better way to kick off the movie section of this blog than with a top 10 list? Everyone loves lists like this because they are in no way subjective or controversial. So let me be crystal clear. This is my personal top 10 list of favorite movies. I am in no way suggesting the movies that appear on this list are better than all-time classics. That will most likely be a future list that I am sure will wind people up. For this one, I tried to focus more on the enjoyment factor and re-watch ability. Some of the greatest movies are hard to watch let alone rewatch. (I am looking at you 2001 Space Odyssey!) I also tried to pick movies from different genres so as to not make the list all Marvel or Disney. I mean let's just be honest with each other, Marvel and Disney make amazing movies!

Keep in mind that, yes they are numbered, but I am not really ranking these movies against each other. Just 10 of my favorite movies from different areas of the film industry. I also thought that it would be a great touch to add a whiskey pairing for each movie. I hope you enjoy my list and I look forward to seeing your lists as well!

Number 10: Fired Up

This movie is hilarious on so many levels. Nevermind the abysmal reviews because this is a movie that you have to have a certain sense of humor for. It is about two football players that become cheerleaders so they can go to a cheer camp and hook up with all the girls there. It is so rewatchable and very quotable. In fact, I think the vast majority of what Lindsay and I say to each other is just a quote from this movie. It is dumb and obvious humor and it just works. It has a similar style to a Will Ferrel movie so if you like those you have to check this one out.

Whiskey: Fireball… I am not sure that is a whiskey though. Fired Up is the perfect college movie and thus it needs the perfect college liquor. Just like Fired Up serves no purpose other than to make you laugh, Fireball serves no purpose other than to get you hammered.

Number 9: Lilo and Stitch

There are two types of people in this world. Those who love Disney movies and those who are lying. Everyone loves Disney movies. That is a scientific fact. So how do you choose just one from the Mouse House? Let me tell you it was not easy. I wavered between three. Frozen 2 was a late edition but made a strong run. Moana was a close second because that movie is also fantastic but in the end, I had to choose one of my all-time favorite movies. Lilo and Stitch. I loved the family aspect and how much Nani cared for Lilo. I liked how it was unique from other Disney movies where there was no royalty or love story. It was about an adorable alien and a little girl who just wants a friend. When Stitch talks at the end and does that little speech about Lilo being his family I still tear up. Ohana doesn’t have to be blood. So good.

Whiskey: Crown Royal Peach over ice. I know peaches are not the first fruit you think of in Hawaii but it still reminds me of the beach.

Number 8: Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi

Star Wars has had such a huge impact on my childhood as I am sure it did with almost every kid. It was an epic story about adventure and has one of the greatest plot twists in movie history. I couldn’t decide between the two so I chose both. Can you blame me? Empire Strikes Back is widely considered one of the greatest sequels of all time and it is easy to see why. Return of the Jedi was the conclusion to an amazing trilogy with so much action. Darth Vader is still one of my favorite all-time movie characters. These movies taught me about hope and that no matter what good will always triumph over evil. Who doesn’t love a classic story like that?

Whiskey: Bookers neat. When the founder of the company retired he left it to his son and trusted him with the process. That is just what Vader wanted for Luke. Both men were just trying to keep the business in the family.

Number 7: Guardians of the Galaxy

It is hard to say if this is my favorite of all the Marvel movies but it is easily the most rewatchable. As great as Endgame and Infinity War are, I can only cry so much. GotG is so lighthearted and genuinely funny. I love the mismatched team dynamic and realistic dialogue. I was pretty into comics growing up and Spider-Man is definitely my favorite but for a group of pretty obscure characters to make such an impact is an impressive statement. The soundtrack is also fantastic and so fun. I love so many of the Marvel movies but GotG is one I will always sit down and watch.

Whiskey: Jack Daniel's and Coke. It is a simple but sweet drink that I could really see a man like Starlord enjoying.

Number 6: Into the Spider-Verse

“But isn’t Spider-Man Marvel? You are a big fat cheater!” I hear you screaming at your screen. Stay with me, dear reader because I found a loophole in my own rules. While it is technically a Marvel property it wasn’t put out by the MCU, it was produced by Sony so, therefore, a different property altogether. HA! In all fairness, this movie was going to be on the list no matter the rules. I adore this movie. I can sit down, watch it, and when it's over, start it over. I am obsessed with the animation style, the jokes are hilarious, and I get to see a bunch of characters and a crazy storyline I read about in the comics in an animated movie. As much as I love Spidey they had my money from the first trailer. There will be a breakdown of this one at some point. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie again.

Whiskey: Angel’s Envy Rye neat. My favorite whiskey with one of my favorite movies. The sweet complex flavors of Rye also blend perfectly with the crazy animation style of Spider-Verse.

Congratulations! You have made it through the first half of the list. Let me know what you think so far and stay tuned for the next half,

Cheers!
